Related: talking of free MMOs, here are some to check out if your Steam pocket is empty. I recently attempted to log into to a very old email accounts, which I can only do by hunting down an even older login for Runescape. A username may bring Buy Maplestory 2 Mesos back a great deal of memories as it happens, especially one like g0ds1ayer94. This saga got me thinking: what is ol' Runie like nowadays? Fuelled by nostalgia, I made a new account and began exploring the fantasy world of Gielinor once more.

In the ten years I've been off, Runescape has gone out of a fantasy-themed chatroom into a fully fledged MMO, complete with its very own annual festival, a card game twist off and enough content to make 12-year-old me weak in the knees. If you can believe it, you need to really download the latest version of the game.

It is a game that's preserved many of its players through continuous updates and unrivalled audience interaction; log for a month and you may have missed something that the community will be referencing for the upcoming few years.

And those are just the largest changes: Runescape has additionally obtained around 650 other feature upgrades in that time, and of course countless patches and fixes which have been deployed. The simple fact that Jagex eliminated the Wilderness for three years still feels like an insult to some past self - even though I was not playing at the time.

Returning after so much has changed is uncanny, because basically it is exactly how I remembered it from 2006. Ten years has done nothing to weather this monster.

In spite of all of the upgrades, slipping back into the same old regime of grinding tools and sprinting to the nearest bank to market them is seamless.

My experience of Runescape in 2006 was Maple M Mesos mainly this: grind for hours, buy a few shiny new gear, smash keyboard upon realising my battle level wasn't enough to equip it, grind battle degrees, equip gear, get killed in the Wilderness, lose shiny new gear, replicate. Every few months I would decide it was time to initiate a new account, motivated by some specialist build I had seen or a inexplicable desire to live an easy life and become some sort of fabled hermit. Frankly, 12-year-old me believed that would be an enjoyable thing to do.
